Spelling Words Unit 8

life ~ The spooky house scared the life out of me!
little ~ The little child was crying about the lost puppy.
left ~ We didn’t have any candy left after the trick-or-treaters came around.
without ~ Please don’t go out in the snow without your coat.
once ~ Once you are finished with dinner, you may go out and play.

Harvest Birds Vocabulary
VOCABULARY (WORDS FROM “The Harvest Birds”) TEST ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2
1. serious– thoughtful; not joking
EXAMPLE: Mom was serious when she said to go to sleep.
2. patch – a small piece of land
When walking around my uncle’s farm, he told me it was time to have a patch of my own.
3. borrow – to use something that someone else owns
My friend was extremely nice when she let me borrow her pencil the entire day.
4. advice – ideas or suggestions about what someone should do
I always love the advice Grandma gives me about treating others kindly.
5. ashamed – feeling guilty, sorry, or embarrassed
After knocking over my mom’s best vase, I was feeling very ashamed.
6. borders – the edges of a place
The borders of our land back up to the finest, and most delicious, pecan trees.
7. separate – divide into groups
Unfortunately, I’m going to need to separate the boys and girls on this particular activity.
8. harvest– the ripe crops that are gathered
I am thrilled that the strawberry harvest is near!
Math – Rounding
This week in Math we are going to be working on rounding numbers to the nearest ten and the nearest hundred.
We will be learning different tricks to help us remember which numbers round up and which numbers round down.
Spelling Words for Friday, October 26
This week’s Vocabulary
VOCABULARY (WORDS FROM “What Do Illustrators Do?”)
TEST ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26
1. tools – things people use to help them do a job
EXAMPLE: Louis picked up one of his father’s tools and accidentally poked himself.
2. sketches – quick drawings without much detail
When Mary was four, she was learning to make sketches instead of scribbles.
3. scribbles – drawings or doodles, drawn in a quick or careless way
The teacher asked us not to make scribbles but to take our time and make a lovely drawing.
4. research – careful study of a subject or problem
I love being able to research the Civil War and all the heroes that fought in the War Against Brothers.
5. textures – ways that surfaces look and feel
I won’t wear some clothes because of their scratchy textures.
6. imagine – to see a picture in your mind
As you’re reading, imagine that you’re in the scene to get a better understanding.
7. illustrate – to make pictures that show something
After reading, I want you to illustrate the two characters cooking.
8. tracing– copying the outline or shape of a thing on see-through paper
My teacher told me that I did a phenomenal job tracing around the letters.
Math Update
We have been studying patterns in math for the past week. This week we will continue with extending patterns and finding missing elements in those patterns. We have also continued practicing subtraction/addition with regrouping. It is important that all students know their math facts. Practice these with your student daily. It will help so much!!
As we introduce new skills and concepts, we will also revisit passed skills already taught. Place value and comparing/ordering numbers will be spiraled throughout the six weeks.

Early Release Wednesday
Next Wednesday, October 17th, Primary and Intermediate students will have an early release date. This will be a training day for teachers. Five professional development classes will begin shortly after your children are dismissed. Because of the scheduled events, we are asking that parents NOT eat lunch with their child on the 17th. Please make note of the times below:
- Afternoon PreK will meet from 8-11 with the morning class
- Primary Early Release – 12:00
- Intermediate Early Release – 12:30
